Several recent headlines have illustrated the unethical relationships between industry and medical establishments. The Department of Justice investigations into these relationships have resulted in huge fines for several orthopedic device manufacturers, which spurred a much tighter oversight of the relationship between industry and medical organizations. Hand surgery is certainly not immune to these stringent regulations and it is important that hand surgeons understand the current rules regarding industry ties. In this symposium, the leadership of Hand Surgery as well as industry representatives will discuss the current relationship and rules of engagement between Hand Surgery and industry.
Learning Objective: To discuss the current regulations that dictate the relationship between medicine and the medical industry, as well as codes of conduct that are considered ethical.
